[ニューヨーク ２日 ロイター] – Oral arguments in a civil lawsuit over former US President Donald Trump’s financial fraud began on the 2nd in a state court in New York, with Mr. Trump appearing in court.
The lawsuit was filed by New York Attorney General James, seeking restitution from Trump for allegedly ill-gotten gains. Lawyers for the attorney general argued in their opening statement that over a 10-year period, Trump fraudulently obtained more than $100 million (corrected) by providing “grossly inaccurate” financial statements to financial institutions.
Meanwhile, Trump attacked Judge Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over the case, saying he is a Democrat who is using the case to thwart his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election. Trump is considered the frontrunner in choosing the Republican candidate.
Before entering the courtroom, Trump told reporters the trial was a “fraud,” a “sham,” and a political vendetta by James, calling Democrats “corrupt.” He also said, “This is a continuation of the greatest witch hunt in history,” adding, “I’ve built a great company. But now I have to go before a corrupt judge.”
Trump wore a dark blue suit with a light blue tie and an American flag pin on his lapel.
