Opposition to Justice Reform Costs Israel’s Defense Minister His Job

The Prime Minister’s Office did not comment on Netanyahu’s decision to fire Galant from his post as minister.

Galant is a member of Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud party.

It has already been reported that Galant, in a televised address on Saturday, called for a halt to the advancement of justice reform.

Galant stated that the planned reform has caused discord in Israel’s military circles and threatens national security.

In a televised address, he called on the Netanyahu-led coalition to wait until parliament resumes from recess next month before proceeding with the reform.

The government plans to submit essential elements of the reform for approval as early as next week.

The government insists that the Supreme Court interferes too much in political decisions, so it proposes by law to allow parliament to overturn court decisions by a simple majority vote.

Also, the proposed reform provides the government with greater power over the appointment of judges.

On the other hand, critics point out that the reform threatens the separation of powers. In the past three months, there have been widespread protests against the reform in Israel.

On Sunday, the non-governmental organization Movement for Good Government in Israel filed a complaint against Netanyahu in the Supreme Court, alleging that Netanyahu violated a conflict of interest agreement that prevents him from making decisions regarding the justice system while he is on trial for corruption.
