Oppenau in the Black Forest: Arrested Yves R. was probably hiding in holes in the ground

For days, police officers in the Black Forest searched for an armed 31-year-old – after his arrest on Friday, the police have now released new details on how Yves R. could remain undetected for so long.

During his six-day escape, R. is said to have moved through the woods near Oppenau mainly at night, reported police and prosecutors. During the day he sought shelter in pits and holes in the ground. R. had mostly fed on water.

The suspect had threatened four police officers during a check in an illegally used garden shed and taken away their service weapons. After that he was gone in the forest. After the incident with the police, he hurriedly packed “the most necessary” and is in the Schwarzwald fled, as the new police report says. He didn’t take any provisions with him.

The investigators assume that R. was not aware of the great interest in his escape across Germany. He deactivated his cell phone so that it could not be located. However, on the day he disarmed the police, he noticed a police helicopter and concluded that they were looking for him.

According to the police, R. initially testified – now he is silent

After R. testified extensively after his arrest, he now exercised his right to remain silent on the advice of his defense lawyers. Since he injured an officer with an ax when he was arrested, the public prosecutor’s office is investigating a suspected assault on law enforcement officers that resulted in a dangerous assault.

Police officers found a personal letter to his relatives when Rs was arrested. R. had written it in case something should happen to him. The 31-year-old did not significantly injure himself when he was arrested. The warrant against him was has now been enforced.

The police had found no new evidence when searching the forest hut or the forest area. The searches have now been completed. The police had asked the public for clues during the search – seven officers alone had pre-sorted them, the police said. The evidence from two witnesses and the track of a personal detection dog finally led the police on the trail of the fugitive.

According to the prosecutor, the man had sat in a bush. The four pistols were visible in front of him, an ax on his lap.
