Operation for lowering the maximum speed costs twice as much as expected NOW

Reducing the maximum speed to 100 kilometers per hour costs the government 19 million euros, Rijkswaterstaat confirms to NU.nl after reporting by The Telegraph Monday. Previously, an account of 7 million euros was assumed.

According to Rijkswaterstaat, the price of 7 million euros was only aimed at adjusting all four thousand speed signs along the highway. “After that, hectometre markers with speed indicators must be placed, software changes will be made in traffic centers and various locations will need extra traffic signs,” said a spokesperson for Rijkswaterstaat.

The 7 million was, according to Rijkswaterstaat, an initial estimate of the costs. “As it gets closer you are better able to calculate everything,” says the spokesperson in conversation with NU.nl. “With such a new development people ask you what it costs, then you also want to give an approach. Now we know what the total project will cost”

About eight hundred employees will start work on Thursday evening, March 12, to replace plates throughout the country. That must be completed before Monday morning March 16 (6:00 AM). If this fails, the planned speed reduction must be postponed. Work is only done late at night and during the nights.

Hectometer posts are taped

The weather can harm Rijkswaterstaat. If the stormy weather of the last few weeks continues, a second attempt may have to be made from Thursday evening 26 March to Sunday evening 30 March.

Rijkswaterstaat has already placed some of the new signs, but there is still a cover over it until Monday 16 March. And the old hectometer posts? Not all of them are replaced in one night, so Rijkswaterstaat will tap them for the time being to prevent confusion.

The speed change is being implemented to reduce nitrogen emissions in the Netherlands. By reducing emissions in traffic, construction is given more room to resume projects. The police have indicated that no additional speed controls will be held immediately after the change.
