Opéra Royal de Wallonie starts new director search

Liège / Berlin (MH) – The Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège, Belgium has completed the selection process for a new artistic director and has started a new round of applications. Of the total of 43 interested parties, only three could have fully met the previous access conditions, the house announced on Friday.

In particular, the required 14-year seniority in a management position is an obstacle for most applicants, it said. This minimum experience will now be reduced to ten years. Participants in the first round could apply again in the second procedure.

An independent, international jury examines the applications. The tender became necessary after Stefano Mazzonis di Pralafera, the long-time artistic director and artistic director of the Opéra Royal de Wallonie, died in February. His successor is to be determined by the end of June 2021 and will take office in Liège by January 1, 2022 at the latest.

The Opéra Royal de Wallonie is one of the three royal opera houses in Belgium. This season it celebrates its 200th anniversary.
