Technology Secretary Peter Kyle emphasized the pivotal role of AI in driving national conversion and economic growth for the UK. This move by the Labor government to embrace AI has drawn criticism from various groups, including musicians concerned about the unlicensed use of their work in AI training data.
The memorandum of understanding outlines a commitment from both the UK and OpenAI to deepen their understanding of AI capabilities and associated security risks, with a focus on mitigation strategies. It also suggests the potential advancement of an facts-sharing programme and the establishment of safeguards to protect the public and democratic values.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating it would “deliver prosperity for all” and that AI is a “core technology for nation building that will transform economies and deliver growth.”
This partnership arrives as the UK government seeks strategies to invigorate its economy, which is projected to have experienced minimal growth between 0.1% and 0.2% in the April to June period. The UK has previously signaled its openness to AI investment from the United States, having secured similar agreements with OpenAI’s competitors, Google and Anthropic, earlier this year. The government anticipates that this collaboration could foster the development of “world-changing AI tech” within the UK, leading to meaningful discoveries and economic expansion.
