Opel wants to sell part of its headquarters in Rüsselsheim

The car manufacturer Opel apparently wants to sell parts of its factory premises at the headquarters in Rüsselsheim. The area is also disproportionately large compared to other automobile plants, said a company spokesman. “Just three years ago our factory premises were larger than the Principality of Monaco.” But nothing has been decided yet.

Opel has been experiencing declining sales for years – and has been undergoing extensive restructuring since it was taken over by the French PSA group in summer 2017. Parts of the Rüsselsheim properties have already been transferred to the engineering service provider Segula and the furniture chain Ikea went. At the beginning of June, Opel also announced that it would “phase out the production of transmissions and forged parts in the Rüsselsheim plant in the course of 2021”. This will free up further buildings directly on the Main.

The ascent had begun in Rüsselsheim

Rüsselsheim was the nucleus of the group more than 150 years ago: Adam Opel After 1862, he and his brother founded a company there that initially manufactured sewing machines and later bicycles. The Opel family began producing automobiles in Rüsselsheim in 1898 – and within decades grew to become one of the largest car manufacturers in Germany.

Opel currently employs around 30,000 people – and has been falling for years. Most recently, the automaker reported a drop in sales of more than 50 percent.
