Only the current leader Lagzdiņš / Diena is running for the position of the President of the Latvian Athletics Union

On Tuesday, the deadline for submitting applications for LVS legal members to the elected positions expired. LVS members have nominated 15 candidates for election as president, vice presidents, board members and members of the audit commission.

In the upcoming elections on April 21, only Lagzdins will apply for the position of president, but Ludmila Beļikova and Andris Smočs will apply for the position of vice presidents.

Candidates for LVS Board members will be Baiba Bļodniece, Emīls Jakrins, Laine Kreicere, Edvīns Krūms, Māris Liguts, Sandijs Pinkulis, Andris Vilcmeiers and Ieva Zunda, but Līga Dzene, Oskars Garkājs, Anna Titova and Guntis Zālītis will run for the Audit Committee.

The LVS Board consists of 11 members of the Board – the Chairman of the Board, two Deputy Chairmen and eight members of the Board. In turn, three members are elected to the Audit Committee.

The Articles of Association of LVS stipulate that if a man has been elected as the Chairman of the Board, then at least one of the Deputy Chairmen of the Board of LVS must be a woman.

Lagzdins returned to the position of LVS president last year. He headed LVS from 1993 to 2001, but after him, Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis took over the duties of its president. From 2005 to 2017, the organization was led by Guntis Zālītis, but then the relay was taken over by the former long jumper Ineta Radeviča.

However, after re-testing, the long-distance long-jumper was found to have positive doping tests during the 2012 London Olympics, which led to her resignation in November 2018.

Lagzdins has been the Honorary President of LVS since 2001, and has also served on the Latvian Olympic Committee and the International Olympic Committee during his career as a sports administration.
