Only one giraffe left in the Riga Zoo The news

There is only one giraffe left in the Riga Zoo

Riga, March 29, LETA. Currently, only one giraffe remains in the Riga Zoo, but the rest have died from the damage caused during their lives, the representative of the zoo Māris Lielkalns told LETA.

One giraffe died in March this year.

The “Facebook” page of the Riga Zoo explains that in less than two years, three of the four Rothschild giraffe males transported to Latvia in 2007 and a year later have died.

This is not surprising. The life expectancy of these animals in nature is 10-15 years, but two of the oldest giraffes in the Riga Zoo had reached the age of 18.

The results of the section show that the cause of their death was a stroke and long-term, but inevitable, age-related digestive problems.

After talks with the giraffe’s European Endangered Species Program (EEP) coordinator, it is expected that two giraffe females will be sent to the Riga Zoo in 2023 at the latest, but already this year the 14-year-old giraffe guy Kimi will meet a friend so he doesn’t have to spend a day alone.

According to international professionals, the zoo specialists have mastered this feeding and veterinary care skills of captive animals, which allows the coordinator of the European Endangered Species Conservation Program to further entrust the Rothschild Giraffe Breeding Group to the Riga Zoo.

This gives hope that the birth of giraffes will finally be experienced in Riga.
