OnePlus turns off camera filter that ‘could see through materials’

The controversial color filter ‘Photochrom’ will be released in the coming week via an update for the OnePlus 8 Pro disabled, OnePlus reports on the Chinese social network Weibo. Photochrom was discredited when users discovered that the filter makes opaque materials semi-transparent, even clothing.

The most shared example is a video by YouTuber Ben Geskin. With the OnePlus 8 Pro, an Apple TV is filmed, a TV cabinet made of black plastic. Normally completely opaque, but with the Photochrom filter the interior of the box can suddenly be seen. The plastic housing takes on an orange tint and parts just below the surface are clearly visible.

Others showed that the filter can see through dark clothing and devices such as keyboards and remote controls.

Infra-red

The function is possible because the camera is in the OnePlus 8 Pro has a limited infrared filter. Infrared light can pass through plastic.

OnePlus is the first phone maker to combine infrared light with a color filter for photography. In recent iPhones, Apple also uses infrared light for its Face ID facial recognition system.

Remove privacy concerns

OnePlus says it wants to allay users’ privacy concerns and therefore disable the photo filter for the time being. Later, there will be a software update that will bring the filter back, but without the privacy concerns, the manufacturer promises.
