One-year-old baby dies in New York shooting during street food

One year old baby passed away this Sunday in New York in a shooting registered in the neighborhood of Brooklyn, confirmed this Monday the mayor of the city, Bill de Blasio, who was silent for the victim.

The baby, identified as Davell Gardner, was shot dead by a man against a group of people who were having a cookout. Three people who were hospitalized were also injured in the incident.

According to police statistics, a total of 39 people died this June in 205 shootings, representing an increase in shootings of 130% compared to the same month last year.

In his daily press conference, De Blasio assured that it was “very painful news”, acknowledged that there is still a lot of work to be done in the city and insisted that he will continue to make efforts to stop the increased shootings that the city has registered since last may.

Last Friday, New York authorities launched an initiative involving community leaders and local NGOs to try to stop rampant violence in the city and especially in Harlem, which, like other neighborhoods in the city, such as Brooklyn and The Bronx, has been witnessed a drastic increase in shootings in the past two months.

The increase in the shootings in New York is directly related to the effects of the covid-19 pandemic and the almost total paralysis of the courts

The increase in shootings has divided the New York Administration and the City Police Department over their causes.

Although both agree that it is directly related to the consequences of the pandemic and the almost total paralysis of the city courts; Police maintain that the prohibition of certain actions – such as a strangulation key to immobilize suspects and the practice of stopping and searching people -, considered violent or arbitrary, is preventing them from acting with the forcefulness necessary to stop the wave of violence.
