THIRD VARIANT – A new variant is added to the range of Fiat New 500, after the sedan and the convertible. Is called 3+1 and has a small additional door, with opening into the wind, on the passenger side, which has the task of facilitating access to the rear seats. With it, Fiat wanted to create a more practical and versatile car for all daily tasks, such as loading and unloading bulky objects or placing a child on the rear seat.
30 KG MORE – In Fiat New 500 3 + 1 the central pillar on the right side is missing, whose task is to increase the rigidity of the car and protect the occupants in the event of side collisions. For this the technicians had to reinforce the structure of the doors. Furthermore, to prevent accidental opening, the rear door opens after the front door. The whole system adds about 30 kg to the weight of the car. According to Fiat, the extra weight has a minimal impact on the car’s handling and fuel consumption.
HISTORICAL NAME – If the doors with opening into the wind recall the origins of the first Fiat 500 from the 1950s, even the name 3+1 it has already been used by Fiat: it was chosen for the 2004 Trepiuno prototype, which anticipated the style of the 500 that arrived on the market three years later.
