One in ten young people received youth care in 2019 NOW

In 2019, 443,000 young people received youth care, which is one in ten young people, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) on Thursday. That is an increase of 3,000 young people compared to the previous year.

This concerns young people up to the age of 23. About 411,000 of the young people up to the age of 18 received youth care, which is one in eight.

Youth care is intended for young people up to the age of 18, but can be extended to 23 years. Youth care includes youth assistance, youth protection and youth probation. In 2019, approximately 41,000 youth received youth protection and 9,000 youth probation.

The number of young people in youth care has increased by a few percent per year since 2015. The number of young people with youth assistance is increasing strongly. The duration of youth care has also increased, from an average of 299 days in 2015 to 361 days in 2019.

Youth assistance must be offered to the municipality and the deduction varies greatly from municipality to municipality. In municipalities in the northeast of the country and in Limburg, 15 percent of young people use youth assistance, more than in the rest of the country. Statistics Netherlands cannot explain why this is the case.
