One in six people cannot afford sustainability | Money

No less than eighty percent of the Dutch feel the need to use solar panels, insulation or, for example, double glazing, according to research among 1000 homeowners from Munt Hypotheken. “Major improvements in sustainability have gained momentum in recent times. People who already had doubts are now convinced of the win-win situation,” says director Ellen Hensbergen. More than a third of the respondents want to make their home more sustainable and a quarter will do so within a year.

However, the choice is not obvious. One in six feels the need to become more sustainable, but does not have the money for it. A third of people postpone making it more sustainable if they have to take out a loan for this. “It’s a decent investment that a lot of people can’t or don’t want to bear at the moment, although it’s good for the wallet in the long run,” Hensbergen said.

A significant proportion of the Dutch (85%) have been using gas, water and light more economically since the increase in energy prices, according to the survey. Lowering the heating (80%) and taking shorter or cold showers (63%) are the most popular cost-cutting measures.
