Mayor Eric Adams and Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell condemned the violence at a news conference at Harlem Hospital. A number of officers mourned the death of their colleague and prayed for the injured officer, Sewell said. “We mourn and we are angry.” Adams said: “This was not just an attack on these brave police officers. This was an attack on the city of New York.”

Authorities said the two police officers involved and one other officer were called to an apartment on 135th Street after a woman called 911 who said she needed help over an argument with her son. There the police officers spoke to the woman and another son without mentioning a weapon.
Third officer returned fire
Two of the police officers were walking down a hallway from the entrance area of the apartment when the perpetrator suddenly opened the door of a bedroom, started shooting and hit both police officers. The third police officer, who was waiting with the mother of the convicted gunman in the entrance of the apartment, returned fire and wounded the gunman in the arm and head.
Under Adams, the New YorkPolice Department has reinstated a civilian unit tasked with taking guns off the streets. The unit was triggered in 2020 over concerns it was responsible for a disproportionate number of shootings and complaints.
