Once & Now Part 40: When the Färberkaserne made room

The Färberplatz as a market square in the old town of Graz was not built until 1904.

In the heart of the old town, numerous squares and restaurants invite you to linger, especially in the summer months, when they are allowed to be open. The dyer’s place is then also lively.
More than 100 years ago, there were no outdoor dining areas around the Schubert cinema. “The photo taken around 1900 looking towards Sporgasse shows the Färberkaserne”, explains city historian Karl Albrecht Kubinzky.

Connection with main square

But it is not a shame not to know this building any more, as the barracks were demolished as early as 1904 so that a market square could be created. “There was even the idea of connecting the new square with the main square by demolishing the building at Hauptplatz 17,” reports Kubinzky. Older Grazers will also remember the wooden market huts on Färberplatz.
