Once Colonized, Algeria Demands Total Respect from France

ALGIERS – President Aljazair Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Sunday (10/10/2021) demanded “total respect” from French . The demand was voiced following a dispute over visa restrictions and critical comments from Paris, which once occupied the North African country.

Last weekend Algeria withdrew its ambassador from Paris and banned French military aircraft from its airspace. Previously, French military planes were free to use the North African country’s airspace to fight jihadist groups in the Sahel region.

Diplomatic commotion broke out over the issuance of visas and was followed by media reports that French President Emmanuel Macron had informed descendants of the 1954-1962 Algerian war of independence that Algeria was ruled by a political-military system that had completely rewritten its history.

Algeria’s presidential office responded by saying the comments, which were undeniable, were “interference” in the country’s internal affairs.

On Sunday Tebboune spoke publicly for the first time about the dispute with France, demanding “total respect” from the former colonial power.

“The return of the Algerian ambassador to France hinges on total respect for the Algerian state,” Tebboune told local media, as quoted by the newspaper. AFP, Monday (11/10/2021).

“We forgot that (Algeria) was once a French colony… History should not be falsified,” he said.

“We can’t act as if nothing happened,” Tebboune said of Algeria’s history and its French colonial past.
