As previously reported, the artistic direction of the annual national holiday concert organized by the Liepāja Concert Hall was handed over to the choir culture director, conductor and visionary Maris Sirmas, who has created a grandiose vocal symphony music concert program in two parts.
On the evening of Wednesday, November 17, the audience was able to experience the concert in person, in the excellent acoustics of the Great Hall. The ambitious “Sea Book” created by Raimonds Tigula and Nora Ikstena with the unique organ lord Iveta Apkalns at the solo instrument led the audience through the story of Latvia’s fate. choir “Latvija”, Pēteris Endzelis delighted the audience with an excellent oboe performance, but the sound of the students of Liepāja Secondary School of Music, Art and Design provided a perspective on the future. The audience of the concert greeted the artists with grandiose standing statuses and undisguised enthusiasm for the opportunity to meet in person.
“I have created the program of the holiday concert on three so-called whales or, in this case, composers. The first is Raimonds Tiguls’ monumental composition “The Book of the Sea”, which, according to our National Day, essentially includes a wish, a look back and a message for the future. The second – the most symbolic and beautiful examples from Imants Kalniņš’s symphonic and choral music in the year of his un celebrated 80th anniversary. The third is a very interesting, but little-known musical personality in Latvia who has honed his profession in world universities – Rihards Fedotovs and examples of contemporary music created by him, ”before the concert with the author of the program’s artistic concept, conductor Māris Sirmais.
