On pressure from animal protection associations, New York City decided this night to ban “selling or holding foie gras” including in restaurants. A ban from 2022 to the chagrin of restaurant owners who offer it on the menu. The text, had been presented at the beginning of the year by several municipal councilors, prohibited from selling, serving or even holding foie gras. It has yet to be ratified by New York Mayor Bill de Blasio.
His disappearance from the tables follows in particular the vigorous campaign led by animal rights associations. The latter have not stopped for months denouncing the “cruel and inhuman” force-feeding of geese and ducks. “This is a historic day for animal rights in New York,” commented after the vote, Matthew Dominguez, political advisor of the association “Voters for Animal Rights” (“Voters for Animal Rights”) , who played a major role in this file.
New York will join the state of California, where marketing has been banned since January, even if the legal battle continues around this decision. The production of foie gras is banned in several countries, including Denmark, the United Kingdom and Australia.
