The Congress of the Latvian Football Federation (LFF) will take place on Friday, July 3, where the new president of the federation and other officials will be elected. Politician, Minister of the Interior Sandis Ģirgen (KPV LV) and President of the Latvian Indoor Football Association (LTFA) Vadim Lashenko will compete for the position of President. On Monday at 11 am in “Delfi TV with Jānis Domburs” live, both candidates will be present in a debate about their vision of the future of Latvian football. At the LFF Extraordinary Congress last October, members decided to remove Kaspars Gorkš, President of the organization. 67 members voted in favor of his suspension, 60 against and two abstained. Currently, the organization works without a president, but LFF Secretary General Edgars Pukinsk has the right to sign. Previously, plans to hold an LFF congress and presidential elections in April were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic, so it was postponed to July 3.
Gürgen is a politician who currently holds the position of Minister of the Interior. He expressed confidence that if elected, the posts could be combined. Previously, Ģirģens has not held any football-related positions.
Lashenko is the president of the Latvian Indoor Football Association. He has run for the presidency of the LFF before and has also been one of the initiators of Gorkys’ dismissal.
