WELL WORTH A LOOK ?
Produced by George Clooney and Kirsten Dunst among others, On Becoming A God In Central Florida is the hot back-to-school comedy-drama. A sharp critic of the “American Dream”, the series attacks the consumer society, the exaggerated sense of patriotism and the bling-bling and illusory spirit of the concept of “self-made man” (hello Trump! ). In this fiction set in a sunny Florida city in 1992, God travels in a helicopter and is called Obie Garbeau II, played by Ted Levine. This man got his pockets full thanks to the FAM (Founders American Merchandise), a company based on a pyramid scheme.
The scam conceived by the mustached, grizzled businessman, wearing chain, rings and gold glasses, will lead Travis Stubbs (Alexander Skarsgård, unrecognizable), obsessed with his propaganda audio tapes, in a psychological infernal spiral. His wife Krystal (Kirsten Dunst), seemingly shallow blonde with a hellish smile and long nails, quickly realizes that she can become poor again at any time because of her husband’s impossible dreams of fortune. Manipulated by Cody (Théodore Pellerin), an overly enthusiastic FAM employee who recruited him, Travis gets eaten alive by his ambition but especially by an alligator after a car accident.
Widowed and on the straw, Krystal can happily count on her friends Ernie (Mel Rodriguez) and Bets (Beth Ditto). But the most important thing for the young woman is to take her revenge on the FAM and its sexist and poisoned environment. After the pilot episode, we then follow with pleasure Kirsten Dunst, brilliant in this role, making a hell of a mess in the anthill while pocketing a few tickets in the process. With a groovy soundtrack with catchy synth notes (Baltimora, T’Pau and Laura Branigan, among others) and a GTA Vice City vibe, On Becoming A God in Central Florida is a finely written, cynical and colorful series. , perfect for the Indian summer. Too bad it does not yet have a broadcaster in France.
