OMV boss does not rule out refinery shutdown | 04/09/20

Because of the corona virus crisis, the OMV Group is currently massively slowing down costs.

Billions of dollars are saved. Europe had already entered the recession and you would not experience a “normal year” at OMV, CEO Rainer Seele said in an interview with the “Press” (Friday edition).

All possible measures would be followed to optimize the costs. Therefore, he cannot rule out short-time work and downsizing this year. But there is still no decision about it. The head of OMV thinks little of government regulations to cut bonus payments in the crisis. “We adhere to stock corporation law: The board of directors decides independently on the dividend proposal. We did that in February. I take note that there should be restrictions on short-time work that should result in a different dividend decision.” OMV will do everything possible to implement its decision, but the development must be awaited.

“I cannot rule out that we have to shut down the refinery,” said the newspaper’s soul. “Then we would have to start a new discussion. But I don’t think so at the moment.”

When asked about a waiver of bonuses, the Group CEO points out that the Supervisory Board will decide on the bonuses for 2020 next year – depending on how it went economically. “I don’t need a governmental requirement to see that a weak 2020 will bring little bonuses. But you shouldn’t punish managers for having a corona crisis and not delivering record results.”
