Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Omicron seems to be spreading in the United States (US). After being in California, now this new variant of Covid-19 was found in New York, Colorado and Minnesota, Thursday (2/12/2021).
In New York state, there are five confirmed cases. Cases were found in Suffolk County, Queens, Brooklyn and New York City.
The local Health Commissioner even said there were communities scattered across the state. So, it wasn’t Hanna who traveled to South Africa (South Africa).
“It’s not just for people traveling to South Africa or to other parts of the world where omicron has been identified,” he said. CNBC International, Friday (12/3/2021).
“States order about 15% of all Covid tests … allowing them to pick up on this trend over time.”
However, no lockdown measures have yet been taken. Previously, when Covid-19 entered 2020, the country closed its businesses and affected the work of residents.
“We are in a much better place, that people are told. Don’t panic,” he said.
“It’s still a public health crisis, but it doesn’t have to be a crisis that leads to closures.”
Meanwhile, Minnesota authorities confirmed one case of a resident returning from New York. The Colorado case was also confirmed in a traveler who recently returned from South Africa.
Previously the first case was found in San Francisco, California. Just like Colorado, new cases returned from South Africa.
US President Joe Biden himself has reportedly tightened travel rules to and within the US. All incoming international passengers must be tested for Covid-19 within 24 hours starting Monday (6/12/2021).
The tightened pre-departure testing protocol will apply to all incoming international travelers regardless of vaccination status. Previously, the US required proof of a negative Covid-19 test to be taken within 72 hours of departure, even if only for newly vaccinated travelers.
Unvaccinated travelers must also have a negative Covid-19 test. The result must also be valid within one day of departure.
The US has also extended mandatory mask requirements on airplanes and public transportation until March 18, 2022. This mandate is supposed to expire in January 2022. The fine will be doubled for non-compliance. From US$500 to US$3,000 for repeat offenders.
Scientists believe that the new variant of the Covid-19 Omicron will “overwhelm” the entire world in no time. It could even be just a matter of months.
Although new vaccines are being developed rapidly, they still need to be tested for efficacy. This can take months.
“So to be honest, Omicron is going to dominate and rule the whole world in three to six months,” said Singaporean infectious disease physician, Dr. Leong Hoe Nam of Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital.
Reflecting on the Delta, this variant will appear in March 2021 in India. In July, it became the global dominant variant and now accounts for 99% of the world’s Covid-19 index.
“We will not be able to rush to get the vaccine out on time and by the time the vaccine arrives, almost everyone will be infected with Omicron given this high rate of transmission and transmission.”
