OM loses hands by tripling the number of threats NOW

The number of threatened victims, witnesses and officials has tripled in recent years, the Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports on Sunday with the NOS. At the same time, too few security personnel would have been hired to relieve the workload.

Chief prosecutor Rutger Jeuken says that there are 350 cases in Central Netherlands where protection is deemed necessary. “We have to do that with the same number of people as a few years ago, when it was a hundred cases,” he says in conversation with the NOS.

According to Jeuken, the staff shortage leads to above-average workload among current staff and there is a risk that they will make mistakes.

The NOS writes that more is being asked of the OM because the determined number of threats is increasing. Since the murder of lawyer Derk Wiersum, who was probably killed by organized crime, a large group of prosecutors, judges and lawyers have been intensively protected by more than six hundred agents.

Minister Ferd Grapperhaus (Justice and Security) acknowledges in conversation with the broadcaster that the services have gotten the “considerably” printer. The police, the Public Prosecution Service and the National Coordinator for Counterterrorism and Security (NCTV) have already asked the government for tens of millions of euros for extra staff.
