Olympics, fencing: Women’s bronze foil, the United States overwhelmed

Volpi, Errigo, Batini and Cipressa close 45-23. It is the third podium out of three in the team tests

The women’s foil remains on the podium: against the United States of the Olympic champion Lee Kiefer, Arianna Errigo – the only veteran of the gold of London 2012 – and the rookies Alice Volpi, Martina Batini and Erica Cipressa dominated and closed 45-23. A score that makes the defeat in the semi-final against the French even more bitter, who overcame the blue in the last assault, 45-43. It is the nineteenth medal of the blue expedition, the tenth bronze and the third medal out of three in the team fencing trials held so far (silver for the male saber, bronze for the female sword).

The assault

Arianna Errigo still in trouble after the final – she started the match with a 3-5 with Ross -, Martina Batini great with the Olympian Kiefer (7-4) and then again with Ross (5-1). Volpi led Italy to 25-16, then the rookie Erica Cipressa – daughter of coach Andrea Cipressa, team gold in foil in Los Angeles 1984 -, placed a credible 5-0 on Massialas who launched the blue on 35-21. All downhill the final, with the scream of Arianna Errigo who places the 45-23 against the Olympian Kiefer. It is the ninth medal in the history of women’s team foil (there are 4 golds and one silver), the redemption after a disappointing individual test (Alice Volpi finished in fourth place).
