Olympics, Federica Pellegrini’s last race: sixth with the 4X100 relay

La Divina bids farewell to the Olympics with the relay, after hitting the fifth final of the 200 freestyle. The team event goes to Australia

From our correspondent Stefano Arcobelli

Federica Pellegrini’s Italy closes the 4×100 mixed in sixth place: it is the Olympic farewell race for the Divina who swims the last hundred meters freestyle in 53 “81, touching for 3’56” 68 after the fraction on the back of Margherita Panziera (1’00 “03), Martina Carraro’s breaststroke (1’05” 88), Elena Di Liddo’s butterfly (56 “96). A farewell without being able to enter the fight for medals: but the Fede will remember her last career final anyway, including a fourth place in the mixed men-women relay with a 52 “70, certainly more competitive relay.

Goodbye

She leaves the scene with no regrets, happy to have achieved the great goal of becoming the first woman in history at the Games to swim five times in the final of the same specialty, the 200 freestyle. The medals go to Australia in 3’51 “60 (Olympic record), silver to the USA in 3’51” 73 and bronze to Canada in 3’52 “60, under the podium China in 3’54” 13 and the Sweden by Sarah Sjostrom in 3’54 “27.
