Olper home parish sends congratulations and invitations to Brazil / Olpe

Pastor Clemens Steiling and church director Wolfgang Hesse congratulated Father on his birthday and invited him to come to Olpe between the celebration of the 75th birthday and the celebration of the golden jubilee of the priesthood next year. Then, according to Pastor Steiling, the personal friendship could be deepened and Olpe’s new Pastor Johannes Hammer could be included in the friendship that has existed for decades.

Pastor Clemens Steiling will leave his office at the end of May and will keep his retirement home in Olpe.

Hugo Scheer was born on May 13, 1946 in the house on Winterbergstrasse 6. In 1967 he passed his Abitur in the advanced high school of the Steyler missionaries. This was followed by the first steps in the Catholic Order, which found their goal in 1972 with the “Eternal Vow”. In October 1972 the priestly ordination and the Primiz celebration took place in the home parish in Olpe.

After further studies in Belgium, the young priest left for Brazil in February 1975. Just one year later, the Muggle Fair generated proceeds of 20,000 DM for the construction of a day-care center in the parish of Olper Father. From 1976 to 1980 Father Scheer worked in the diocese of Aracuaí.

In his new home town of Rubim, he built a community center in addition to the day-care center and, as a mega-project, a completely new hospital. Social housing with its modern and hygienic drinking water supply was another milestone in his work. All projects were actively supported by the Olpe Muggle Fair and the willingness of many people from Olpe to donate.

After a long study visit to Rome, Father Scheer moved to the Archdiocese of Vitória in 1986. There the Olper became a professor of theology. Father Scheer has held the office of rector of the university since 1992.

Despite his academic activity, the professor remained loyal to pastoral care and social work. With Caritas he founded projects for street children and “HIV-infected children”. He was and is responsible for the deployment of interns and students from Germany who work in Brazil.

On his 75th birthday, Father Scheer offered his Archbishop in Vitoria the resignation of all offices. A decision on this has not yet been made.
