OLED805 and OLED855: new Philips Oled TVs are available

The manufacturer Philips is marketing its new Oled 805 and 855 televisions which feature a new video processing processor and a new remote control with backlit buttons.

The Philips OLED805 television is the successor Philips OLED804 that we tested. This TV uses a 55 (140 cm) or 65 inch (165 cm) Oled panel displaying Ultra HD definition from LG Display, the Ambilight ambient lighting system on three sides and the Android TV system in version 9.0. Ambilight always does its little “wow” effect, and apparently it’s a real addiction for Philips TV users. The manufacturer claims that 80% of buyers who try Ambilight definitely adopt it. Subsequently, its users renew their television with a model equipped with this ambient lighting system.

The Philips TV operates Android TV 9.0 with a latest generation Quad Core processor, 3 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage which have been ensuring good system fluidity since 2019. Philips will not immediately switch to Android TV 10 and prefers to bet on system stability 9 for now. Philips also incorporates a specific “Works with Alexa” layer that allows its Android TVs to work with Amazon’s Alexa ecosystem. We also find compatibility with all HDR formats, such as Dolby Vision and HDR10 +, in addition to the classic HDR10 and HLG formats. HDMI remains confined to the HDMI 2.0b version, but they still support ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) which automatically reduces the display delay with compatible consoles. According to our information, Philips has not worked to improve this display delay which remains around 33ms, while Samsung and LG are now falling below 16ms (only one image delay). We will check the delay in the display from the first tests.

The two major novelties are the fourth generation Philips P5 processor and the remote control. The Philips P5 Gen 4 processor embeds a dose of artificial intelligence. Similar to what Samsung, LG and Sony do, Philips is now leveraging the machine learning to classify the different elements of the image (texture, object, face, etc.) and apply specific filters (color, contrast, movement and sharpness). The AI mode rendering is stunning with genuinely sharper objects on the screen, but processing is – as with all manufacturers – disabled in cinema mode.

The other novelty is the Philips remote control, a little more pleasant to use than that of last year, with in addition a better finish and, above all, a key backlighting system (a novelty that is also found on Sony’s premium TVs for 2020).

If the Philips OLED805 television has extra-thin feet placed on each side (see the test of Philips OLED804), the Philips 55OLED855 is distinguished by the presence of a rotating central foot, close to the one seen on the Philips OLED854 that we tested. However, the foot of the 65-inch model is not rotatable.

The Philips TV is available in a 55 or 65 inch version under the references 55OLED805 and 65OLED805 sold respectively € 2,290 and € 3,290. The Philips 855 with its central foot is sold at the same prices.
