Oh! Xi Jinping calls to find people demonstrating the COVID lockdown

Jakarta

Chinese authorities have launched an investigation into several people who gathered during last weekend’s protests against COVID-19 restrictions.

As reported by Reuters, the country led by Xi Jinping has begun asking police officers in Beijing to call protesters to submit written notes about their activities on Sunday night. In another case, a student was contacted by his college and asked if he had been in the area where the event was taking place and to provide a written report.

“We are all desperately deleting our chat history,” a Beijing protester, who declined to reveal his name, told Reuters.

“The policemen were too many. The carabinieri came to check my friend’s identity card and then took him away. We don’t know why. A few hours later they let him go,” he added.

The Beijing Public Security Bureau did not respond to requests for comment. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said the rights and freedoms must be exercised within the legal framework.

Burning discontent with strict COVID-prevention policies during the three-year pandemic sparked wider protests in cities thousands of miles away over the weekend.

The largest wave of civil protests in China since President Xi Jinping took power a decade ago comes as the number of COVID cases is hitting record highs every day and most cities face new lockdowns.
