The city of Offenbach reacts to the littering of a memorial next to a city center construction site.

The city quickly reacted to the disfigurement of the memorial for the victims of the Holocaust at the German Unity Square in downtown Offenbach. As reported, the area around the memorial stone was littered with building materials and waste. An entrepreneur had therefore contacted the FR.

According to city spokesman Fabian El Cheikh, it is clear that materials and rubbish have been stored there illegally. They would have been outside of the approved site facility. The contractor for the new Rathaus-Plaza shopping center was identified as the cause. The latter said that he was not aware that it was a memorial. He promised to alert all construction workers to compliance, El Cheikh said.

To protect the stone memorial plaque, which was created after the Second World War on the initiative of the Association of Persecutors of the Nazi Regime and the Association of Anti-Fascists, the city service company ESO commissioned the construction of a barrier.

Yesterday the site was cleared of building materials and debris. A container standing nearby is said to be picked up to this day. It is open whether the regulatory office will impose a fine on the building contractor.
