Mexico, one of the countries with the highest excess mortality rates in the world. According to Wall Street Journal this position is due to “Flawed government count” during the coronavirus pandemic.

An analysis of the medium revealed that more than 265,000 deaths higher than expected for 2020 in Mexico. Compared to recent reports of deaths from COVID-19, these figures would exceed 150,000 deaths from the pandemic disease.

These figures could be due, not only to the virus itself, but also to those cases in which patients had to delay treatment for chronic diseases. The former Secretary of Health, Salomon Chertorivski, estimated that excess mortality would end at 300,000 by 2020.

On the other hand, he described the current situation of the country as “The worst catastrophe Mexico has experienced in a century, since the Mexican Revolution and the Spanish flu pandemic ”.

To exemplify the problem of registering deaths in Mexico, the US media used the case of the Cristóbal de Coyotepec family, in which 29 of the 34 members were ill. Two of them died, but the Mexican government did not count their deaths as part of the official figures because their death certificates report “probable covid.”

In comparison, the number of additional deaths in Mexico was 267,734 through mid-December. On the other hand, the official number of deaths from COVID-19 in Mexico is 137,916, but several experts estimate that this number is higher than 300,000 deaths.

At first, the government flatly refused to classify deaths from the virus without official proof. However, with the panorama presented in the country for the month of October, the decision was made to make the criteria more flexible, as long as the case was reviewed by an approved medical committee.

The US media also stressed that another factor that influences the underreporting of deaths is the limited tests carried out in the country to detect the disease. In total, between 15 and 20 tests are applied with every 100.00 inhabitants, which means that it is the lowest rate in the western hemisphere, según Our World in Data.

In Mexico, patients must meet a number of characteristics to be considered as COVID-19 patients and the government screens those who present at designated public hospitals for the pandemic.

Further, WSJ stressed that constantly Mexican hospitals are left without evidence, while another 145,000 of them are lost. On the other hand, there are thousands of tests carried out in private laboratories that are not considered in the official registry either.

Even the undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López-Gatell, official spokesman for the pandemic, has been repeatedly criticized for the lack of will he presents in the face of the number of tests carried out.

The positivity rate in Mexico is the highest in the world, according to Our World Data. Which represents a percentage of 45%. This generates alarm considering that the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that countries should be concerned if the rate was higher than 5%, otherwise, there would be many cases without detection.

Currently the country registered 1 million 588 thousand 369 positive cases and 137,916 deaths from COVID-19 at the national level. And, only in the last 24 hours they were confirmed 16,468 infections and 999 deaths caused by the disease caused by the SARS-COV-2 virus.
