The testing of the side streets on Wilhelmsplatz for passing cars on market days is a small step in the right direction. However, the ban should be extended permanently.

There is no solution for car traffic at Offenbacher Wilhelmsplatz that makes everyone happy. And it is a good sign that even the CDU was able to warm up to a test closure of the side streets for motorized through traffic. The quality of stay will increase. But the decision doesn’t go far enough. Because SUVs, sports cars and those looking for a parking space will continue to spoil their appetite with their exhaust gases in the evening when people meet to eat and drink on the square. It would be logical to block the side streets completely for cars passing through – and to make exceptions for people who want to transport heavy purchases by car. There are ideas on how to implement this. And if there were a cargo bike rental system in town, people might leave the car behind.
