Octavia dethroned. In the first nine months, it is not the best-selling car in the Czech Republic

Sales of new passenger cars rose by 9.1 percent year on year to 161,824 vehicles in three quarters. Compared to 2019, however, it is still a 15 percent decrease. In addition, the positive sales trend is complicated by production constraints due to a lack of chips and other components; in September, sales were 16 percent lower than last year. The most popular car is no longer the Octavia but the smaller Fabia. This follows from the statistics of the Association of Car Importers.

Sales of new cars are hampered by a lack of chips and logistics problems. As a result, imports of used cars are doing well, rising by 19.6 percent to 136,877 by the end of September. Their average age is 10.5 years.

The best-selling brand is the Škoda brand with 56,074 cars, which is one percent less year-on-year. It is followed by Hyundai with a growth of 26 percent to 15,002 cars sold and Volkswagen with 14,237 cars, which is 31 percent more year-on-year. Toyota, Kia and Mercedes-Benz finished in other places.

The best-selling models were the Škoda Fabia (12,204 cars), the Škoda Octavia (10,556) and the Škoda Kamiq (8921). The Fabia managed to acquire the Octavia sales scalp for the first time in nine months since 2008.

In terms of business classes, SUVs come first with a share of 43 percent. In second place is the lower middle class with 17 percent, followed by small cars with 14.6 percent. The share of cars with a petrol engine exceeded 68 percent, diesel cars accounted for almost 25 percent. Companies bought 76 percent of the cars.

According to EY partner Petr Knap, the weakest September since 2014 is at a time when there is strong demand and the Czech Republic is catching up with the delayed renewal of the vehicle fleet, a strong signal that there are no new cars on the market. “The demand for used cars is strong, even at a record level, clearly showing that there is still interest in purchasing passenger cars. Alternative drives (hybrids and electric cars) have almost doubled compared to last year. However, I still believe that with at least a little functioning production and deliveries, we could keep in the range of five to ten percent growth compared to last year, “he told ČTK.

Overall, registrations of new light commercial vehicles increased by 20.1 percent to 14,332 cars. Compared to 2019, it was a decrease of eight percent. The first is the Fiat brand with 1857 cars sold, followed by Renault and Peugeot.

Sales of new trucks increased by 24 percent to 6,223 cars. In September, it fell by 19.3 percent year on year. The first is the Mercedes-Benz brand with 1135 registered cars, followed by MAN, DAF, Volvo and Scania.

Bus sales fell 18 percent to 791 vehicles last year. The domestic Iveco Bus sold the most with 289 registered buses, followed by SOR with 235 and Setra with 92 cars.

Registrations of new motorcycles increased by 4.5 percent to 18,913 machines. In September, they fell by seven percent year on year. The best-selling was traditionally Honda with 3662 registrations, followed by Yamaha with 1591 machines sold and CF Moto with 1327 motorcycles.
