Obtaining Narcan for Free through Mail Order in New York City: A Guide

NEW YORK — Naloxone (Narcan) is now available for free in homes in all five boroughs thanks to a partnership between NEXT Distro and the New York City Department of Health.

Naloxone (Narcan) is a safe medication used to reverse opioid overdose, such as heroin, prescription pain relievers, and fentanyl, but it is safe to use even if opioids are not present.

The new partnership allows New York City residents to receive a naloxone kit by mail, free of charge.

Due to COVID-19 related closures and restrictions, access to in-person naloxone is limited in New York City.

To receive a naloxone mail order kit, New York City residents will need to view a training video and provide shipping information. Submission information will then be collected by the New York City Department of Health via an online form. All information will be stored securely and only accessible by members of the Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution Unit (OENDU) at the New York City Department of Health.

Orders will be processed within 2-3 business days after your mailing information is submitted. After that you can expect the kit to arrive in 1-2 weeks.

The training video and secure form are available in English and Spanish, according to the NEXT Distro.

Anyone with questions about the distribution of Narcan can contact here.

The New York City Department of Health has partnered with select pharmacy chains throughout the city to make free Overdose Rescue Kits available to anyone on request.

The list of pharmacies and the necessary requirements to receive one of their kits can be found here.
