Oaxaca teachers reject remote SEP classes; Union supports them

Teachers from Oaxaca rejected the distance class strategy presented by the SEP because it is an “exclusive” model and they say that they will start the school year in person until the conditions of the pandemic allow it.

This Monday, the SEP reported that the school year will begin on August 24 with classes broadcast on open television.

The teachers, members of Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) and the National Union of Education Workers (SNTE), They accuse that this modality is a form of neoliberal teaching that ignores the reality of communities and peoples.

“We reject the SEP hybrid model because it does not consider the realities of our communities and towns, as well as the social and economic conditions of the vast majority of students and of the Mexican population in general, in addition to the fact that it is intended to dispense with the work of the teachers, ”said Section 22 of the SNTE / CNTE in a statement.

The position on the part of the SNTE member professors reflects the differences that exist with their national representation, which showed full support for the SEP just hours after the announcement.

Another of the teachers’ arguments in Section 22 is that the distance system further increases the inequality gap by not applying it under the right conditions.

“Only a minority of students had and have the conditions to pursue this type of education, this means that it is an exclusive, discriminatory, superficial and anti-pedagogical education,” they point out.

They regret that the SEP reuses a model that was applied unexpectedly a few months ago in order to complete the cycle and certify millions of students.

In Oaxaca “we tell them that there is no beginning of the school year through the model proposed by the SEP, the school year must begin in person when conditions already exist to do so,” say the teachers.

The signatories ask the teachers of the entity to participate in the State Workshop of Alternative Education to plan the return to face-to-face classes.

We are next to the President: SNTE

For its part, the national leadership of the SNTE supported the strategy presented by the SEP.

Contrary to what was expressed by Section 22, the Secretary General of the SNTE, Alfonso Cepeda Salas, indicated that they will support the distance modality since it guarantees the right to education and prioritizes the health of the school community.

Cepeda Salas assured that, before making this determination, the federal authorities listened and attended to the proposals submitted by the SNTE.

He highlighted the recognition made by the SEP to the work of the teachers and the respect that there will be for their salaries, benefits and allowances.

“Once again the education workers of Mexico will demonstrate that we are with the Homeland (…) We are as always, next to the institutions, next to the President of the Republic,” said the secretary of the SNTE.

To conclude, Cepeda said that in order to achieve greater success in educational coverage, “it is necessary to close the digital divide and resume programs to provide computer equipment to students and teachers.”

This Monday, the head of the SEP, Esteban Moctezuma, reported that the return to classes will be remote because there are no conditions to return to the classrooms.

The secretary pointed out that the students will return to the classrooms until the entities have a green light.

Therefore, the federal government’s alternative will be to continue classes online and now also through open television.

Moctezuma clarified that this will not replace teachers.

For this, the government signed an agreement with the four television stations in the country: Televisa, TV Azteca, Imagen Televisión and Multimedios.

These will transmit educational content for 30 million students in 16 school grades.
