NYT: The West has begun preparing Ukraine for a spring breakthrough

The American newspaper The New York Times, in its analysis of the situation in Ukraine, discusses why in the last few weeks some western countries suddenly decided to send weapons to Kyiv that were previously refused.

USA and Germany – provided the latest Patriot air defense systems. France, Germany, Great Britain, Poland, and again the United States approved the sending of various armored vehicles.

A day ago, during a visit to Lviv, Polish President Andrzej Duda announced Warsaw’s plans to transfer 14 German Leopard tankswho are in service in the Polish army, within the framework of the international coalition for the needs of the armed forces of Ukraine.

As for the possibility of transferring Leopard heavy tanks to Ukraine, according to Lambrecht the German government has not yet made a decision on this matter. The minister again stated that Germany does not intend to take unilateral steps in the supply of weapons to Kyiv.

In recent months, the Ukrainian authorities have repeatedly turned to Germany with a request for the delivery of Leopard tanks, which, according to Kyiv, could have a significant impact on the course of military operations. Chancellor Olaf Scholz, however, said that on this matter Berlin would act only in coordination with its allies, with the United States in mind in the first place.

So far, no country has supplied Western-made tanks to Ukraine. On Wednesday, it became known that Poland is ready to transfer to Ukraine the Leopard tanks that are in service with the Polish army. While London announces plans to transfer Challenger tanksa Washington announced readiness to send Bradley infantry fighting vehicles.

This is due to the fact, according to NYT correspondents, that Ukraine has a very small window left to prepare for a possible spring offensive by the Russian military and the West is well aware of this.

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valery Zaluzhny, recently stated that in order to fully seize the initiative on the battlefield, Ukrainian troops need about 300 heavy tanks of the Western model and about 600 units of other armored vehicles.

According to the American publication, we may now be witnessing the first stage of the implementation of this request.

We recall that Poland offered Germany to send Patriot systems to Ukraine, where, according to Warsaw, they would be more useful. the pentagon, although he did not directly refuse the transfer of “Patriot” to Ukraineexplained that these are complex systems that require extensive training of the military personnel who will operate them and do not operate on a “drop-and-use” basis.

Subsequently, however, the US nevertheless, they decided to provide the Patriot air defense system to Ukraine and already Ukrainian soldiers left for the USA, to be trained to work with them.
