NYPD Reminders: Sidewalk Barbecues Prohibited in NYC During Summer Months

NEW YORK – One of the most common activities during the summer months are the famous barbecues, and in some parts of New York City, residents often use the sidewalks to enjoy the activity with family and friends.

However, the New York City Police recalled that barbecues on sidewalks and playgrounds are prohibited. In addition, it is not allowed to obstruct the passage of pedestrians by placing tables, chairs, or any object on the platform. The consumption of alcohol in public spaces is also prohibited.

The reinforcement of the authorities to prohibit this type of activity on the sidewalks was seen in different brochures posted on the streets of neighborhoods such as Harlem.

“It is illegal to have an outdoor barbecue on public roads and in playgrounds. If you want to do one safely you can call 311 to find out what places are allowed,” the NYPD flyer said.

Apparently, according to conocer New York Post, the measure seeks to reduce shootings and fights resulting from parties in public places during the summer months. Also, avoid fires.

No details have been released as to what the consequences would be for those who do not follow the law. However, the measure has created controversy because it is a traditional activity for many during the summer.
