NYC food delivery men face dangers in pandemic

Two electric bicycles have been stolen from Sergio Solano in less than 6 months.

This food delivery man claims that he has lost more than $ 3,000 and that, despite reporting the robberies to the Police, so far they have not been resolved.

“What we are looking for is that they are not just in these cases. That the cases that colleagues have lost their lives due to a tool be followed up. It is not that we seek a personal favor, but rather that we seek justice for all,” explains Solano .

It is because of this type of situation that he, along with four other delivery men, created a Facebook page called The Diary of the Deliveryboys in the Big Apple, to provide mutual help between workers.

The creators of the group are family and the idea was born as they shared their experiences on the streets with each other. And in four months they have already gained about 2,700 followers.

César Solano, is a food delivery man and was one of the creators of the page: “The objective of the page is to inform us of what has happened with all the delivery colleagues. We have published here the accidents that have happened and we have published of the colleagues who have passed away. ”

The Solano brothers say that during the pandemic they have noticed an increase in the number of assaults on them and theft of bicycles, including cases in which workers have lost their lives.

In addition, on the page they complain about problems as basic as the use of the bathrooms.

These delivery men work through the applications and say that many restaurants do not let them pass and the public toilets close at 5 in the afternoon, while their day can last until midnight.

In this regard, Segio shares his opinion: “They specify, the bathroom is for the clients, but we are the ones who are in the place of the clients. The client is not there but we are on behalf of the client.”

The group meets daily to discuss the impacts on their work and possible solutions.

For example, they are already creating their own credentials because many of the delivery men do not have identification.

The credential will bear the name of the Facebook page, the worker’s name, emergency number and date of birth.

César Solano explains: “In other words, so that, in that case and God forbid, and an accident happens to a colleague; if they cannot call the emergency number, they can send it to the page. We on the page can publish it and thus obtain more information from the relatives, this is the purpose of this credential “.
