NEW YORK – New York City said it will take legal action with other cities on Thursday to prevent the Trump Administration from withholding funding for cities that the Justice Department has designated as “anarchist jurisdictions.”
The designation, applied to late September to New York, Portland and Seattle, it came with the threat that a wide variety of federal funds could be withheld.
President Trump’s Sept. 2 order gave the director of the Office of Management and Budget 30 days to issue guidance to federal agencies on restricting federal grant eligibility for cities on a possible DOJ list.
Such grants represent a large chunk of New York City’s already limited annual budget – more than $ 7 billion in fiscal 2021 alone, or 7.5% of the city’s total projected revenue.
In justifying its decision, the Justice Department cited the rise in gun violence in New York City, budget cuts by the NYPD, and steps by several district attorneys not to prosecute charges related to the protests. earlier this summer.
This is a developing story.
