The New York Department of Labor announced that it is working with different partners to find scammers who have misled the beneficiaries of the Excluded Workers Fund (EWF).

According to the department, fraudulent groups and individuals would be targeting EWF beneficiaries by using their information to gain access to their payment cards or to intervene with the issuer of the card to have it suspended and reissued at a new address.

For this reason, the agency asks New Yorkers who receive aid funds to be vigilant and alert to these types of scams and to report if they detect any fraudulent action or if they have doubts.

Individuals who wish to report fraud should do so to the New York attorney general’s officer on the website http://on.ny.gov/agfraud or by calling the Prosecutor’s Office hotline at (800) 771-7755.

On the other hand, the department also points out that to protect themselves from all forms of identity theft people can continue to use online practices, review the credit report (http://ftc.gov) and report any suspicious communication related to the benefits of the Excluded Workers Fund.

Here we also explain how to prevent your card from being cloned to receive the funds.

Earlier this year, New York created the $ 2.1 billion Excluded Workers Fund to help undocumented immigrants excluded from federal aid. But the largest fund of its kind in the country dried up just months after the state began accepting applications following a flood of claims and rapid distribution of aid.

The Department of Labor stopped accepting new Applications since October 8, even those who submitted an application in the two weeks prior to that deadline may not be approved.

Nevertheless, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul did not rule out working with state legislators to get more money during upcoming state budget planningas well as finding ways to boost employment among those in need who don’t qualify for federal incentives.
