Kansas City Current and San Diego Wave to Compete in Inaugural World Sevens Football Tournament
Fort Lauderdale, FL – The kansas City Current and San Diego Wave FC of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) will participate in the first-ever World sevens Football tournament, set to take place in Fort lauderdale, Florida. The competition,featuring a fast-paced 7v7 format,will showcase top talent from around the globe and further elevate the profile of women’s soccer.
This event marks a significant step in the growth of the sport, providing a unique platform for NWSL clubs to test their skills against international competition. The Current, fresh off winning the 2025 NWSL Shield and securing the No. 1 seed in the postseason, and the Wave, boasting a roster of established stars, will be among the teams vying for the inaugural title. The tournament offers a dynamic environment for player development and a compelling spectacle for fans as women’s football continues its global expansion.
The Kansas City Current’s squad includes 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner Chawinga, alongside Brazil internationals Debinha, lorena, and Bia Zaneratto. Assistant coach milan Ivanovic emphasized the team’s suitability for the 7v7 style, stating, “Our team thrives on intensity, creativity, and competition, which fit perfectly with the 7v7 style of play. This tournament is an incredible possibility for our players to test themselves against some of the world’s best in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.”
San Diego Wave FC will make their Sevens debut with a roster featuring Delphine Cascarino,named to the NWSL Best XI earlier in the season and the team’s leading goal contributor,alongside fellow internationals Kenza Dali,Kailyn Sheridan,Adriana Leon,and Melanie barcenas.
