Nursing teacher Lieke Merkens comes with relaxed online …

Do more with social media in education. That is what Lieke Merkens, a nursing teacher at the Leiden branch of MBORijnland, has as a mission now that the ‘socials’ play such an important role in the students’ lives.

It is not without reason that she will launch the first of a series of videos on her school’s YouTube channel on Wednesday, intended for students, graduated nurses and other interested parties.

The videos are called ‘Lessen van Lieke’, of which a new episode goes online every week. In the first series, topics such as the anatomy and pathology of the brain, career opportunities within the nursing profession and nursing techniques are discussed. Such topics emerged from the research that Lieke conducted among her students.

For an educational and at the same time relaxed atmosphere in her videos, 27-year-old Lieke receives her guests in a ‘living room setting’. In the first two episodes, these are brain scientists Hanneke Hulst and Piet Bouman, who work at the Amsterdam UMC. In the second episode, the calf brain is dissected to give an idea of the human brain. In the regular column ‘The Crusher’, the guest is presented with a personal, burning question from a viewer.

The teacher hopes not only to captivate viewers with ‘interesting subjects about the profession’, she also wants students to ‘experience more connection with the school.’ The slogan of ‘Rijnland’ is also that it is more than just an MBO. “We want to go a step faster for students and, for example, collaborate with the business community in an innovative way,” explains spokeswoman Sandra Helmus. “For example, the videos also show care institutions with which there is a lot of cooperation from the study program.”
