Number of infections and admissions continues to rise

Between 1 and 7 October, an average of 3,749 new corona infections per day were confirmed in Belgium, according to preliminary figures from the health institute Sciensano on Sunday morning. That is an increase of 89 percent compared to the seven days before.

According to the dashboard of Sciensano, 6,083 infections were detected on Wednesday 7 October.

The upward trend in the number of corona infections therefore continues. Saturday was still an increase of 80 percent compared to the seven days before. Since the beginning of the epidemic, 156,931 people have been infected in our country.

The number of hospital admissions also continues to increase. In the past week, an average of 119 people were admitted to hospitals every day, an increase of 66.7 percent. There are currently 1,257 people in hospital, including 226 in intensive care.

Between 1 and 7 October, an average of 15.4 people per day died from the consequences of an infection. Meanwhile, 10,175 people have already died from covid-19.

Virologist Marc Van Ranst warns on Twitter that Belgium is gradually ‘going to the top of the world in terms of the number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants’. ‘Follow all measures and limit your social contacts’, he says. “We’re not doing that well enough, folks!”
