‘Number of bookings with Airbnb fell by 70 percent due to corona crisis’ | NOW

Airbnb saw the number of bookings collapse in the past spring due to the corona crisis, the news agency reports Bloomberg Thursday. In May, 70 percent fewer stays were booked via the website than a year earlier. The market recovered slightly in June, but the number of bookings was still 30 percent behind compared to a year earlier.

Interestingly enough, more people book an overnight stay in their own country. In the United States, Airbnb saw more domestic bookings between May 17 and June 3 than in the same period in 2019.

A similar trend could be seen in the Netherlands. From Amsterdam there was an increase of 85 percent for the number of bookings to a rural residence. In Rotterdam this increase was 120 percent, in The Hague 60 percent and in Utrecht 80 percent. Airbnb thinks that due to the corona crisis, people like to stay in sparsely populated areas and prefer not to cross the border.

Due to the corona crisis, Airbnb revenue decreased 67 percent in the second quarter from a year earlier. Sales fell from more than 1 billion dollars (almost 850 million euros) to 335 million dollars. This brought the company to a loss of $ 400 million before taxes, depreciation and amortization.

Despite the hefty corona effect, Airbnb still plans to go public this year. That left the rental platform earlier this week know to American media.
