Bolzano / Strasbourg – It is official: after ten years of legal dispute, representatives of the South Tyrolean Freedom Party have now been legally convicted for the notorious “broom poster”. In the run-up to this last negotiation, Süd-Tiroler Freiheit deliberately waived the right to statute of limitations in order to be able to go to the European Court of Human Rights.

Review: Ten years ago, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the annexation of South Tyrol by Italy, the sweep was symbolically represented with a broom to make it clear that South Tyrol can do without Italy. The South Tyrolean freedom was then reported for abuse of the Italian flag. Sven Knoll and Eva Klotz – at that time members of the state parliament – and Werner Thaler – legal representative of the movement – have now been found guilty of vilifying the Italian flag and sentenced to fines of 3,000 euros each.

For the lawyer of the South Tyrolean Freedom, Nicola Canestrini, this is incomprehensible: “People who do not expect justice do not suffer from disappointment in courtrooms. Defending fundamental freedoms is a difficult path, but the difficulties will not deter us! “

Now the South Tyrolean freedom with Canestrini will turn to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg. Because the movement is convinced: the right to freedom of expression must apply more than a paragraph from the fascist era.
