Now finally open after years of bickering

After years of haggling, people from IJburg can go straight to the Maxis shopping center again. The Nuonweg was officially opened this afternoon.

Nuonweg, or rather Overdiemerweg, was a temporary connection from 2013 and was closed a year later. To IJburg’s great dissatisfaction, because the stretch of asphalt was an ideal connection to the popular Maxis shopping center in Muiden. The IJburgers now had to make a detour for miles via the A1.

Amsterdam wanted to reopen the road quickly after the closure in 2014, but the neighboring municipality of Diemen blocked this. The road was often used as a shortcut, and was considered too unsafe by Diemen. After years of wrangling, the council of Diemen agreed in 2017 to open the road, provided that Amsterdam would pay the 5 million euros for the renovation of the ‘shortcut’.

This afternoon the moment had come and traffic alderman Sharon Dijksma opened the road together with her fellow drivers from Diemen and Gooise Meren. According to the municipality, it took years of preparation, research and consultation with neighboring municipalities, stakeholders Vattenfall and Maxis, Rijkswaterstaat and the provinces of Noord-Holland and Flevoland.

It is still being investigated whether the connection of the Maxisweg with the Pampusweg can be adapted, so that the last part of the bus lane between Almere, Muiden, Weesp and IJburg becomes a completely free bus lane.
