Novavax’s COVID-19 vaccine was found to be 90% effective in a phase 3 clinical trial, the biotech company announced Monday.
A statement from the company indicated that its two-dose vaccine demonstrated 90.4% efficacy overall and 100% protection against moderate and severe disease during a study of nearly 30,000 participants in the United States and Mexico.
In the trial, the researchers recorded 77 cases of coronavirus, according to the statement. Of those cases, 63 occurred in participants who received placebo, while 14 occurred in those who received the vaccine, the company said.
In addition, the vaccine was 93% effective against “circulating variants of interest and variants of interest”; 100% efficacy against variants “not considered variants of concern / interest”; and 91% effective in high-risk populations, according to the statement.
The vaccine was also “generally well tolerated” by the participants, the company said.
“Serious adverse events were rare and balanced between the vaccine and placebo groups. Not a single adverse event was reported by more than 1% of the participants, ”the statement details, adding that the most common symptoms were injection site pain and tenderness, fatigue, headache and muscle pain.
