CNN Tennis News: On Monday, Novak Djokovic lost his place at the top of the men’s singles world rankings – one Positionwhich the 35-year-old holds more weeks than any other player – having missed Indian Wells and 19-year-old Carlos Alcaraz won the tournament.

“No, I have no regrets,” Novak Djokovic said, “I’ve learned throughout life that regret only holds you back and basically makes you live in the past and I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to live too much in the future either. I want to be as much as I am in the present moment but naturally think about the future, create a better future. So I congratulate Alcaraz. He absolutely deserves to return to number one.”

“Too bad I’m not in Indian Wells, Miami, could play. I love these tournaments. I had a lot of success there. But at the same time, it was the conscious decision I made and I knew there was always a possibility that I wouldn’t go. And it’s the current state or situation that I hope will change for the US Open later this year. For me, this is the most important tournament on American soil.”

Novak Djokovic reiterated that at this stage of his career he cares most about the Grand Slam events and will wait and see if he can go to New York and play at the US Open. For now, Djokovic’s focus has shifted to the upcoming clay court season in Europe.

Novak Djokovic:

Whether he regrets missing tournaments in the US because of his unvaccinated status: “No, I have no regrets. I’ve learned throughout life that regret only holds you back and basically makes you live in the past, and I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to live too much in the future either. I want to be as much as I am in the present moment but naturally think about the future, create a better future. So I congratulate Alcaraz. He absolutely deserves to return to number one.”

“It’s a shame I couldn’t play in Indian Wells, Miami. I love these tournaments. “I’ve had a lot of success there but at the same time it was a conscious choice I made and I knew there’s always a chance I don’t go and it’s the current state or situation I hope Change for later this year for the US Open. For me, this is the most important tournament on American soil.”

On whether he thinks he’ll be allowed to play at the US Open later this year: “Whether I’m allowed to play or not obviously depends on the highest government decisions, so I’ll just wait and see.”

Whether the controversy he’s been involved in has dampened his enthusiasm for the game: “To be honest, not at all. On the contrary, I’m as enthusiastic as ever, as motivated as ever, for the sport, for my family, for my foundation, for all the projects and everything I do off the pitch… I just don’t want nothing regret, I don’t want to think about the negative circumstances that will occur in my life because there will be so many more. That’s normal, that’s life, and it’s in difficult times that you grow the most.”

“The dignity and integrity and staying true to myself, my beliefs and my rights are paramount.”

On his priorities for this year: “Roland Garros, Wimbledon, US Open. Those are the top three priorities this year. I’ll do whatever I can to build my form.”

About Serena Williams: “She’s gorgeous. First of all as a person. I was lucky enough to know Serena privately too. We actually did an investment together and we had some joint initiatives off the pitch. I am so happy to see her accomplishment as a mother. We talk together about parenting and sports. We’re talking about health. She’s always interested in talking about nutrition, how to get to the next level with rest and training, and how to improve her skills and abilities, although I don’t see what else there is to improve or improve upon. She inspires me and all tennis players around the world. And she has been an icon of our sport for so many years.”

Why he thinks his generation is so successful in tennis: “At the beginning of my pro career when I broke through, the men were all about Federer and Nadal, their rivalry, such a contrasting style of tennis and the epic matches they played. It was difficult for me to get into the mix. I really had to work and achieve some great things to be considered a part of the conversation with these guys. It’s really an honor to be a part of that era with them – at times I was pissed to be with them in that era – but when I think about everything I’ve been through with these guys, I’m grateful. They made me the player I am today.”
