Novak Djokovic reached 300 weeks as No. 1, 10 more weeks and reached Federer

2020 was a very special year for Novak Djokovic, the number one in the world. The Serb got off to a great start and won tournaments. However, his season became increasingly conditioned from month to month by the interruption of the pandemic that halted his incredible winning streak that season, and then was full of criticism of not-entirely-strange episodes in the tennis world.

Novak Djokovic’s 2020 season began with victories before the ATP Cup and especially before the Australian Open. Djokovic defeated his great rival Roger Federer first in the semifinals and then in the final after a heated fight against Austrian Dominic Thiem, current number 3 in the world.

The cessation of tennis slowed his ambitions. Djokovic has been criticized for organizing the Adria Tour exhibition tournament, a bad side for the tennis world with a tournament (government organization, it should be said), without security protocols and with several tennis players who are then infected with the Covid-19 virus.

Novak Djokovic himself, together with his wife Jelena and his trainer Goran Ivanisevic, tested positive for the swab and the criticism gradually increased. After returning to tennis, Novak won the Masters 1000 in Cincinnati and was disqualified in the round of 16 of the US Open for mistakenly hitting the linesman with the ball.

Novak Djokovic and the record

In 2020, Novak Djokovic, number 1 in the world, reiterated his desire to break all possible records in the tennis world. Thanks to victories in Cincinnati and Roma, Nole overtook Nadal and became the tennis player with the most Masters 1000 in tennis history.

The Serb continues his quest to catch up with the two biggest rivals in the Grand Slam fight with Federer and Nadal, who now have 20 slams and the Serb 17. Now the record that Djokovic comes closest to is perhaps the one he is most interested, namely that of weeks at the top of the ATP rankings.

Today, December 21, 2020, Novak Djokovic has reached the top of the ATP rankings for 300 weeks. However, Novak is working to surpass these results in 2021: Roger Federer is the tennis player in history at 310 weeks who has been at the top of the ATP rankings for most of the time, and Djokovic wants to steal that record too.

If it is not undermined during these months (the frozen ranking certainly helps during this period). Nole will be the tennis player with the most weeks at the top of the ATP Tour on March 8th, setting another record in an already successful career. Photo credit: Novak Djokovic website
