Nothing works anymore: The cultural lockdown in a country comparison

The Austrian cultural scene remains in lockdown. A fate that she shares with most cultural institutions around the world – an overview:

  • Germany: Our neighbors vary the measures depending on the federal state and the incidence of infection: In Hesse, rehearsals are suspended on five stages (Staatstheater Darmstadt, Kassel and Wiesbaden, Landestheater Marburg and Stadttheater Gieen) until February, performances until the end of March. Saxony has museums and stages (including the Semperoper / Schauspielhaus in Dresden) also closed until the end of March. Berlin’s Senator for Culture Klaus Lederer does not expect gaming in Germany until after Easter.
  • USA: The Broadway theaters in New York stopped operating until June. The New York Metropolitan Opera will not resume its live programming until October, but offers many streaming offers. Most museums allow a limited number of visitors by prior arrangement; the Smithsonian Institution in Washington is closed, as is the Art Institute in Chicago and the Getty Center in Los Angeles. Most of the US cultural institutions are run as private companies on a donation basis, with little government support. After Corona, numerous bankruptcies in theaters and museums are feared.
  • France: In museums, cinemas and theaters, operations will be suspended until February 1st. An opening after that is unlikely because a nationwide night curfew from 6 p.m. has been in effect since Saturday.
  • Switzerland: The culture is subject to the same regulations as sports facilities and restaurants: Closing until the end of February. Productions without an audience (for TV broadcasts and internet streaming) are permitted.
  • Italy: Cultural activities have been suspended since October 26th – with a few exceptions. A corona traffic light regulates things: in yellow regions with a lower reproductive value, museums “as symbolic places of culture” were finally allowed to reopen. The Vatican Museums should be open to visitors again from February 1st. The Uffizi Gallery in Florence will remain closed until further notice, although Tuscany is yellow. A reassessment of the cultural situation is expected this week.
  • Grobritannien: British culture was also shut down. Theaters, museums and cinemas are closed in England, Wales and Scotland. There are regional exceptions in Northern Ireland.
  • Sweden: Museums are closed until January 24th, the Royal Opera in Stockholm until March 26th. If more than 50 people are allowed in the hall from March 27th, the theater will resume.
  • Spain: The “state of alarm” applies until May 9th – there are no cultural events until then, all museums remain closed.
  • Hungary: All cultural institutions are closed without exception until February 1st.
  • Czech Republic: All cultural events with an audience have been banned without a time limit since December 27th.
